Edmonton International Airport (EIA) is continually working to create a barrier-free environment for travellers and visitors with disabilities.
Accessibility at EIA
The services available to passengers include:
- Washrooms are equipped with grab bars and Life Call
- Braille signs for elevators and washrooms
- Value Park shuttle bus equipped with wheelchair lift
- Airport staff are trained in assisting persons in need
- Over-sized revolving doors
- TTY and volume control pay telephones and hotel/motel booking telephones
- New "Hearing Loops" at the Information Booth to enhance the travel experience for hearing aid wearers
- Accessible check-in and information counters
- Eye-level flight information screens
- Video paging on flight information screens
If you are travelling with a mobility aid (stroller, wheelchair, walker etc.) you can check with your airline for assistance. To ensure the best service available we encourage you to advise your airline in advance (ideally when making a flight booking) of any special assistance that may be required at the airport (e.g. to book a wheelchair). We recommend that you arrive at our Airport with plenty of time prior to your flight departure. Your airline will advise you of the check-in time, or minimum connection time requirements if you are connecting.
When travelling with a mobility aid, you may either check it in with your airline or take it to the aircraft with you. This is dependent on its size/weight and the airline regulations. Please contact your airline to confirm details regarding their checked bag or carry-on allowance and how they can accommodate your needs.

Passengers who need special assistance may be able to have an aide, family member or other escort help them through the pre-board screening checkpoint and to their boarding gate. We encourage travellers with special needs or parents of unaccompanied minors to contact their airline directly for more information. Escort passes are issued by the airline upon check in at the airport. If using online or mobile check in, please proceed to your airline customer service counter at EIA to request an escort pass. Escorts will need picture identification and will also be processed through pre-board screening.
Transportation for passengers with special needs can be prearranged with Skyshuttle.
For passengers with disabilities arriving by car, Edmonton International Airport provides special parking and pick-up/drop-off for people with disabilities. For short visits, curbside disability parking can be accessed by driving into the taxi queue and notifying the attendant of your request.

The Easy Parkade has disability parking stalls, spacious elevators and ramps to the Departures Level.
On arrival, the Value Park Lot attendant can direct you to disability parking stalls. A complimentary shuttle bus to and from the terminal is equipped with a wheelchair lift.
There are two 30-minute courtesy zones located on the Departures level near doors 26 & 30 to facilitate drop-off.
Awards and Certificates
Edmonton Airports has received a Certificate of Recognition from the Hard of Hearing Community, the White Cane Award, and the City of Edmonton Mayor's Award for Accessible Service and Senior Recognition for its work. In October 2004, Edmonton Airports received the inaugural Percy Wickman Accessibility Award in recognition of its commitment to making Edmonton International Airport one of the most accessible airports in Canada.
Percy Wickman Accessibility Award
EIA is honoured to be selected for the Percy Wickman Accessibility Award. This provincial award is presented to the owner of a new or newly renovated facility that has exceeded building codes in terms of wheelchair accessibility. Once again the Edmonton International Airport, as shown in its newly completed addition to the building, is demonstrating its commitment to providing accessibility to all Albertans, including those with disabilities.
This award reflects the leadership of our Barrier Free Committee and our project teams responsible for Expansion 2012. It reminds us that we didn’t just build a building, we invested the time to engage our (Barrier Free) community to develop infrastructure that reflects our community’s needs!
